What is this opportunity about?

Synopsis

CGH Occupational Therapy (OT) Department will be celebrating this day by creating awareness of the OT profession amongst the public amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 outbreak has negatively affected the physical and mental well-being of Singaporeans amidst the uncertainty that this pandemic brings. We recognize the importance of addressing such issues and enhancing occupational participation of individuals. Hence we intend to use this opportunity to share our knowledge on ways to improve the physical and mental well-being of the public, while increasing awareness of the various roles and skills of an Occupational Therapist.

In collaboration with the National Library Board, a series of 4 talks will be conducted (Work-from-home the ergonomic way, Do household chores the ergonomic way, Manage your stress, Activities to engage your mind and body).

Analysis of opportunity

Participatory values that the opportunity promotes

  • Meaningful engagement

  • Choice and control

  • Personal and Societal Responsibilities

Facilitators To Participation

  • Micro level:

    • Increasing participants’ knowledge and awareness on importance of self-management to facilitate continued or new participation in meaningful occupations whilst being in a period of change

    • Increasing participants’ awareness and access to possible resources to promote wellbeing and participation

  • Mesa level:

    • Aim to cater to wide range of target audience through variety of topics (e.g. working from home, activity engagement for seniors, stress management)

  • Macro level:

    • Increasing public awareness on the holistic concept of health beyond the physical aspects, and acknowledging the importance of cognitive and mental health as well

Barriers to Participation

  • Micro level:

    • Reduced awareness of older adults on the use of technology to be able to access talks

    • One-directional dissemination of information with reduced opportunities for discussion and to check on participants’ understanding of content

  • Mesa level:

    • Lack of opportunities to follow up on long-term outcomes as the current collaboration is an once-off ad hoc event

Future Plans to Promote Participation

  • Consider redirecting training/talks to staff in care facilities (e.g. daycare/community) to ensure sustainability of long term outcomes (e.g. training staff to engage their clients in meaningful participation, or training staff to teach clients/caregivers on how to facilitate participation and its importance).
